They Threw His Property Overboard and Made Him Miss Ship’s Movement

 

Doc received a phone call at 3 am informing him that he was deploying on a ship for a period of six months and to be ready by 6 am. This was not a surprise to Doc as he had received these phone calls before.

At the airport Doc was looking at the plane and wanting to go back home because he did not like airplanes. The two people with him, Will and Keith had no such fears.

After a five hours flight from Honolulu to San Diego, the three reported to the ship. They would sail the next morning, so Doc had lots of work to do to ensure everything was up and running.

The first thing Doc noticed was that the maintenance man, Rich, was nowhere to be found. No work had been done in the spaces, and they were not ready to go. Doc found Rich coking and joking with staff members and to him that wasn’t a good sign. Doc advised Rich to go to the spaces but he never did. Doc had to prepare the spaces by himself.

After getting underway the Intel was always giving Doc a hard time about what Will and Keith were doing. It was nothing bad, but the fact that the Intel Officer knew about it, told Doc that someone was running their mouth.

After sailing for a month, the ship pulled into Subic Bay, Philippines. Doc talked the Division Officer into letting the three of them leave the ship at the same time. They went out to Subic City. Later that evening Rich shows up and tells them that they were in trouble because they all left the ship. Doc wondered how Rich knew they were in trouble when he was the only person outside of the Division Officer who knew about it. It became clear to them that they had a snitch among them and they started looking at Rich differently.

Will and Keith wanted to split his wig with locks in the sock. That is when you put padlocks in a sock and beat the hell out of someone. Anyone who has been in the youth authority or the penitentiary can tell you all about this. Doc did not think that was the way to deal with Rich. He needed something really bad to happen to him and he needed to be miserable. Doc told them to hold off and that Rich would be dealt with in time.

When the ship pulled into Thailand after being underway for three months, Doc arranged the schedule so that everyone worked one day and had three days off. Rich did not like that and told the Intel Officer, who advised we all had to be there every day. That was the last straw with Rich. He was going to be dealt with soon as the ship went back to Subic Bay.

The ship sailed directly to Subic after leaving Thailand. On the way there, Doc was pondering what could be done to Rich that would make him cry. He remembered reading Othello, a story about a Moorish general who was deceived by his ensign. Doc talked to Will and Keith and it was decided that deception would be used to entangle Rich in a big mess with the ship, staff and his command back in San Diego..

When the ship moored again in Subic Bay, Rich was invited out to Barrio Barretto. They told him it was Keith's birthday and that they wanted him to go with them. They were leaving the next morning. Rich jumped at the idea. Doc did not think Rich cared about the birthday, but rather would use the occasion to gather dirt and report back to staff. He was in for a surprise..

A girl began talking to Rich and Rich was eating it up. Rich had no street sense whatsoever and could not see he was being set up. The girl had been paid to talk to him, take him home, and not wake him up in the morning. Barrio Barretto is out in the boonies and if you do not know your way around, you will find yourself in the middle of nowhere with snakes and monkeys acting savage. Rich left with the young lady and told them he would see them in the morning..


The ship sailed at 6 am for Hong Kong and rich was not onboard. He had missed ship's movement. Missing ship's movement is the one offence you do not want to deal with. . That evening, Rich's locker got cut open and all his property put into trash bags and thrown overboard. Everything he owned was gone. The sheets on his bed were thrown overboard.

Rich met the ship in Hong Kong and he got called on the carpet that day. He got busted, fined and put on restriction. He could not prove it but he knew he had been set up. The Captain was not hearing it. Rich looked like a wet puppy when he came to the spaces after the Captain wore him out..

Rich did not say two words the rest of the deployment. He was no longer talking to staff about what was happening in the spaces. Doc, Will and Keith did not feel sorry for him and did not talk to him. When the ship pulled into Hawaii, Rich was sent back to San Diego where he would once again stand on the carpet. It is not known exactly what happened to him, but word is he loss his clearance and sent packing..

People might wonder why such a thing happened to Rich? Rich was a snitch and in that type of life you have to be able to trust the people you work with. If you cant, you do what you must do to remedy the situation.

      When the phone rang, Doc was watching football on the television. He almost let it ring, as was his habit. It was a pleasant surprise to hear Eline’s voice when he answered. He and Eline had met some six months earlier while he was in the Netherlands for a Jazz Festival.       People might say I was mean in my handling of a classroom bully. It probably was mean. All these years later, I still do not have one ounce of guilt. Julia Benz was a bully, and she reminded me of Brutus. Julia taunted me daily. She would throw spitballs at me while we were in class and hit me with her fist when we were in recess. The Quiet Room

  Doc was an adventurous kid. He was mischievous, and he liked the girls. The staff at the children’s home did not care for his midnight creeps. He was living at the children’s home because he left home at 13 because of a bad family situation. I imagine every kid has their breaking point. Doc worked down in the barn and the pasture taking care of the horses and cows. Taking care of horses and cows is not an undemanding job. To do it right requires hard work and you must like animals.   It must be a dream In 1991, all the houses on First Street    vanished and all that remained were cement slabs, plumbing fixtures, and electrical wires from the street. Every day the police would bring in bus loads of people who the society at large deemed as unfit. They would place these people on the cement slabs where there used to be a house.  The men and women were paired off and electrical wires on top of their heads and another in their butts. The police would then allow the waiting crowd to see the show. The    hypocrites and pretty people did not believe these poor people were    being harmed, since the subjects of this madness were not human.  They forced the pairs to perform various acts.
